If you want to work as informant, not only for the cop but also for other people then you need to know how to pursue the newest information more than other people because this is the required skill as informant. Many people who work as informant learn how to infiltrate and get information without noticed by any person. This is nearly same like the skill that a spy must has. However you still need to learn how to get the potential client for this purpose because right information without right person to learn will be difficult thing to see.
